Twitter Is Down

Micro-blogging service Twitter has been taken offline in what the company believes is a coordinated attack.

The popular site has been subject to a so-called denial-of-service attack, according to the company's status blog.

Denial-of-service attacks take various forms but often involve a company's servers being flooded with data in an effort to disable them.

It is not yet clear when the outage began or whether the service has suffered a global blackout.

How DOS attack happens: The main weapons in DOS attacks are "bot nets," or networks of "zombie" personal computers they've infected with a virus. The virus lets the criminals remotely control innocent people's machines, which are programmed to contact certain Web sites over and over until that overwhelms the servers that host the sites. The servers become too busy to respond to anything, and the Web site slows or stops working altogether.
